Cape Town, South Africa

 

Hey! My name’s Claire and I’m the Experiential and Influencer Marketing Specialist at Encircled. Last summer I travelled to Cape Town, South Africa for two weeks. I spent much of my time in Cape Town and also took day trips to explore other parts of the Western Cape. This week, I’ll be sharing my favourite experiences in Cape Town and the stunning surrounding region.

 

CAMPS BAY, CAPETOWN

One of the first things I did after arriving was taking a very touristy City Sightseeing bus around Cape Town. Driving along the coast of the Western Cape was incredibly stunning, especially from the open-top of the bus. This was taken in Camps Bay, on our way back to Cape Town. You can see Lion’s Head, with Cape Town’s city centre, sitting just behind it.

BOULDERS BEACH PENGUIN SANCTUARY, SIMON’S TOWN

The penguin population in the Western Cape has fallen drastically over the years due to over-fishing and habitat destruction. The population loss has been so severe because when one-half of a breeding pair falls ill, the other half doesn’t find a new partner. At the Boulders Beach Penguin Sanctuary, struggling penguins are treated and provided with shelters that you can buy for them.


KIRSTENBOSCH NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

I spent my first afternoon in Cape Town exploring the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, which finds its home in the southeast foothills of Table Mountain. This suspension bridge ran through parts of the gardens and led to an expansive viewing platform from where you could see the rest of the gardens.

CAPE POINT, THE MOST SOUTH-WESTERN PLACE IN AFRICA

We travelled from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope, a nature reserve that contains Cape Point. The view was absolutely stunning. In the nature reserve, we encountered (from a distance!) several baboons, elands and ostriches.

There are an incredible number of things to do in Cape Town. We saw several people paraglide over the city, starting from Lion’s Head and landing on the beach on Clifton Beach. As we were in Cape Town during their winter, the weather was a bit unpredictable, so book weather-dependant activities early in case you need to rain-check. 

HIKING TABLE MOUNTAIN IN THE EARLY MORNING

On my last day in Cape Town, a friend and I woke up at 5:00am to begin our hike up Table Mountain. We left early both to avoid hiking in the heat and to make our afternoon flight out. We watched the sun rise over the city from the top of the Mountain - it was an incredible merging of nature and the city.
